On May 8 and 9, the days of memory and reconciliation dedicated to the memory of the victims of the Second World War are celebrated in the world. These days are devoted to the memory of more than 80 million people who died during the war, reports Ukrinform.

On May 7, 1945, an Act of Military Capitulation of Germany was signed, which came into force on May 8 at 23:01. On this occasion, in this day in many cities of Europe and the USA were held crowded celebrations. In addition, at the request of the Kremlin at 00:43 on May 9, Moscow time, another “Act on the unconditional surrender of Germany” was signed in the suburbs of the German capital Karlshorst.

November 24, 2004 Time of Remembrance and Reconciliation for Those Who Lost Their Lives during the Second World War was proclaimed by the decision of the 59th session of the UN General Assembly. It prompts UN member states, non-governmental organizations and individuals to celebrate one or both of these days – May 8 and 9 as a Remembrance Day for all the victims of the Second World War.

In Ukraine, Time of Remembrance and Reconciliation for Those Who Lost Their Lives during the Second World War is established in accordance with the Law of Ukraine “On the Perpetuation of the Victory over Nazism in the Second World War of 1939-1945”. In line with this, Ukraine began a new tradition of celebration on May 8 and 9 in the European spirit of memory and reconciliation.

The official slogan of commemorative events is “1939-1945. We Remember. We win.” Symbol of the Day of Memory and Reconciliation since 2014 is the poppy flower.

Earlier, the “Journalist” reported that the UN paid tribute to the employees who had died during their duties.
