President of the United States of America Donald Trump believes Germany is dependent on Russia because of the construction of the Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline across the Baltic Sea.
The US president said this at a meeting with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg in Brussels, in the lead-up to the Alliance summit. This was broadcasting on the NATO website, UNIAN news agency reported.
«It’s very sad when Germany makes a massive oil and gas deal with Russia,» – Trump said.
The American president explained that Germany paid far too little for its own defence (just over 1% of her gross domestic product (GDP) – ed.), and simultaneously spent billions of dollars (USD 11 billion – ed.) on the construction of the Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline.
«We have to defend Germany against Russia, and than Germany pay billions of dollars to Russia. I think this is very unacceptable. The former German Chancellor is the head of the gas pipeline company that supplies gas. In the end, Germany will have almost 70 per cent of their country controlled by Russia with natural gas, and you tell me that it is appropriate?» – Trump noted.
The US president added that this issue should be raised in conversation with Germany.
«If you look at it, Germany is a captive of Russia,» – he summed up.
As «The Journalist» reported, the European Commission cannot stop «Nord Stream-2» construction.
