INFO: The war in Afghanistan is the full-scale armed aggression of the Soviet Union against sovereign Afghanistan under the pretext of fighting the mojahedin, in which the government forces of Afghanistan and the Soviet Union participated against the insurgent groups of the mujahedin. It began in December 1979 with an attack by special forces of KGB USSR on the presidential palace in Kabul and the assassination of President Amin and his team followed by the introduction of ‘limited contingent’ of the Soviet Army into the country. According to official Soviet data, the war continued until the withdrawal of the bulk of Soviet troops on February 15, 1989. As a result of this war, about 1.5 million, or 10% of the population of the country died (according to international data recognized by the USSR). Soviet casualties, according to official USSR data, amounted to about 15,000 troops.
More than 160,000 Ukrainians participated in the Soviet-Afghan war. Of these, 2,378 died, including 60 missing or captured. More than 8,000 Ukrainians were injured, 4,687 of them returned home disabled. Out of 72 people who were awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union during the years of the Afghan war, 11 are Ukrainians.
