Recep Tayyip Erdogan called the decision to change the status of Hagia Sophia a matter of country’s national sovereignty.
The opinion of other countries will not affect Ankara’s decision to change the status of Hagia Sophia and revert it into a mosque. This was stated by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Anadolu reports.
“Turkey decided to change the status of Hagia Sophia from a museum to a mosque as it represented the desire and will of the people. The opinion of other countries cannot affect our decision,” he said.
The president also noted that those who criticize Turkey “cannot fight Islamophobia on their territory.” He also called this decision Turkish sovereign right.
On July 10, the Turkish president signed a decree on changing the status of Hagia Sophia. The object will be reverted to a mosque to carry out the worship of the Muslim cult.
