U.S. condemns violence during protest actions in Kyiv

The Embassy of the United States of America in Ukraine condemns the violence during protest actions in Kyiv, transpired outside the Verkhovna Rada on December 17. This was reported by the press service of the department on Facebook.

“The United States supports the right to peaceful protests. We condemn violence against police and journalists that occurred outside the Verkhovna Rada today,” the report said.

Recall, clashes between law enforcers and participants of a protest rally against farmland sale occurred on the Hrushevskogo st. in Kyiv downtown. Activists intended to set up a tent camp, but law enforcement officers prevented them to do so. First, there began a verbal skirmish, and then pepper gas was used. Protesters accused law enforcement officials of provocations.

During this fight, two police officers were injured; one of the protesters was detained. By evening, the number of detainees increased to 26 people.
