The United States has deployed MQ-9 Reaper reconnaissance and strike drones, as well as 90 Air Force personnel to the 71st Air Base near Campia Turzii, Romania for “intelligence gathering, surveillance and reconnaissance in support of NATO operations,” Liga.net reports.
“The forward presence of MQ-9 demonstrates the U.S. commitment to the security and stability of Europe and aims to strengthen relations between NATO allies and other European partners,” reads the message.
The unit was transferred to the subordination of the 31st Fighter Aviation Regiment at Aviano airbase in Italy. The number of UAVs has not been specified.
