Researchers from New Zealand claim that Alexander the Great died of Guillain–Barré syndrome. This is stated in press release of University of Otago.

New Zealand’s Dr. Kathryn Hall from the University of Otago proposed her version of the cause of death of Alexander the Great. In her opinion, it could be Guillain–Barré syndrome – an inflammatory autoimmune disease that affects the peripheral nervous system. As a result, the patient develops muscular weakness, paralysis of the airways, tachycardia, and arterial blood pressure may occur.
Without appropriate therapy, which did not exist during the life of Macedonian king, a person can die from respiratory failure, pneumonia, sepsis, cardiac arrest.
The researcher believes that the cause of this disease could be bacteria from the genus Campylobacter, which were common pathogens at the time, and which are one of the causes of Guillain–Barré syndrome. She also notes that other versions trying to explain Alexander’s death do not consider Plutarch’s testimony, according to which there was no sign of decomposition on the king’s body even a few days after his death. According to her, in fact, Alexander, these few days was still alive. Probably, as a result of the development of Guillain–Barré syndrome the king had paralysis and breathing became almost imperceptible. According to Hall, ancient physicians didn’t say that they died not because of a lack of a pulse, but because of a lack of breathing, so paralysis of respiratory muscles could make it harder for them.

“Claiming that Alexander the Great died six days later than previously thought, I wanted to initiate new debates and discussions and, perhaps, rewrite history books. His death may be the most famous ever recorded case of a false statement of death,” says Hall.
