Ukraine faces water scarcity- disappointing forecast by NSDC

The National Security and Defense Council (NSDC) of Ukraine stated that the past 5 years have been a low-water period, so there is a likelihood of a water shortage in the basins of some rivers and the problems of providing the population and industries of the country with ground water.

“Representatives of ministries and departments, scientific institutions, specialists of the National Security and Defense Council staff examined the issue of the state of ground water bodies and forecast indicators of the availability of ground water for the population and sectors of the Ukrainian economy over the current year. According to the State Agency for Water Resources, the last 5 years have been a low-water period and there is a possibility of a water shortage in the basins of some rivers that have a significant anthropogenic load,” the department stated.

According to the Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council, Oleksiy Danyliv, the likelihood of water shortage requires measures to optimize the use of water resources and to adjust economical water consumption. Danyliv also stressed the importance of a complete inventory of groundwater sources and artesian wells in order to include them into the country’s water supply systems.

In addition, it is necessary to attract additional funds to modernize centralized water supply systems to provide the population with quality drinking water.

Also during NSDC meeting was initiated and discussed the issue of the need to develop the water strategy of Ukraine. Following the meeting was adopted a protocol with recommendations to the Government of Ukraine regarding ensuring the state’s water security in 2020.
