Ukrainian and Italian scientists have left the Russian Gamma-400 space project, which plans to launch an astrophysical space observatory in 2030 to observe gamma radiation sources in the Universe, Ukrinform reports.

Ukrainians decided not to participate in the project.

Kyiv experts had to manufacture detectors – transparent crystals, which made gamma particles to lose energy when passing through it, so they can be measured in this way. Also, their task was to create an equipment that measures the EM environment.

The Italian side refused to participate in the project for administrative reasons. Italians were planning to make a part of the device for the observatory that measures the arrival angle of a gamma particle. Now all this part of the work should be done in Russia.

At the same time, Belarus agreed to take part in the project. An act of intent to work together was signed at the level of academy of science.

Gamma-400 is designed to obtain data to determine the nature of dark matter in the Universe, develop the theory of the high-energy cosmic rays origin and elementary particle physics, study cosmic gamma radiation in the high-energy and X-ray range, detect charged particles cosmic rays, as well as to search and research the gamma-ray bursts.
