During a visit to the Zhytomyr region, the Minister of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources Roman Abramovsky took part in a meeting of the working group of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Environmental Policy and Environmental Management and the Law Enforcement Committee for causes of wildfires and prevention of wildfires in the future, the Ministry reports.

The Minister heard out reports on problems arising in the work of forestry, and said that the Ministry will hold consultations with specialists and experts, based on which a draft State Forest Management Strategy until 2035 will be developed.

“It is necessary to develop a strategy for the next 15 years and determine the main priorities for the development of forestry, forest management, reforestation, ways to finance measures for forest management, forest protection, and the prevention and elimination of the consequences of forest fires,” Abramovsky said.

A component of this strategy will be the development and implementation of the National System for the Protection of Natural Landscapes from Fire.

As part of the trip, the minister examined the territories where wildfires occurred in April this year, including the most affected Ovruch and Narodychy districts.

Abramovsky handed over to three forestry, namely, Narodychy, Bilokorovetske and Luhynske, the fire fighting equipment worth UAH 10.7 million, the funds for the purchase of which were allocated by the government in April this year:

“The government and the ministry are concerned about the fire safety situation in Ukrainian forests. We understand that this is the result of prolonged underfunding, the lack of a comprehensive arrangement of the industry, including special and heavy equipment. Of course, not only the material and technical equipment is necessary in order to minimize forest fires, but also the implementation of fire-fighting measures, which should also be at the proper level.”
