General Director of GTS Operator of Ukraine Serhiy Makogon has said that after the first line of the Turkish Stream was launched, Ukraine has completely lost gas transit from the Russian Federation to Turkey and Southern Europe, namely to Greece and Bulgaria.
According to Makogon, “after the pipeline construction in Bulgaria to be completed and the second line of the Turkish Stream will be launched, Ukraine will additionally lose some of the transit to Hungary and Serbia (up to 15 billion cubic meters).
“The launch is scheduled at the end of 2020 or at the very beginning of 2021,” he specified.
Makogon believes that “it is critically important to prevent the completion of the Nord Stream-2 construction, as this will lead to a complete loss of transit from 2025.”
“This means USD 2.5-3 billion of annual income from transit for Ukraine,” he stressed.
He also added that “the potential decision of the German energy regulator to extend the rules of the European gas directive to Nord Stream-2 could significantly reduce the profitability of this project, since Gazprom will be able to load only 50% of its capacity.”
“But no reason to relax. The fight against Nord Stream-2 should remain a top priority not only for the GTS Operator of Ukraine and Naftogaz of Ukraine, but also for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of energy and environment protection,” Makogon concluded.
