The United Nations General Assembly for the first time will be held online due to the coronavirus pandemic, DW reports.

This proposal was made by the Chairman of the UN General Assembly, Tijjani Muhammad-Bande.

“I suppose that restrictions on international travel and holding large-scale meetings with the direct participation of state leaders due to the COVID-19 pandemic may still be to some extent still valid in September 2020,” Muhammad-Bande said.

He said that countries must send the UN an embargoed speech of up to 15 minutes by their president, prime minister, some government minister or UN ambassador at least five days before the assembly.

One or two diplomats from each country will be able to personally attend the meeting.

The UN General Assembly has never been canceled since UN foundation in 1945, but was postponed in 2001 due to 9/11 attacks in the United States and in 1964 due to the financial crisis.
