The UN Security Council on Tuesday [April 23] adopted a resolution proposed by calling on states to combat sexual violence in armed conflicts, UN website reported.
Some 13 countries backed the resolution, Russia and China abstained.
The resolution states that the UN Security Council “calls upon the parties to the conflict to ensure the ceasefire and peace agreements contain a provision in which sexual violence in conflict and post-conflict situations qualifies as a prohibited act, as well as ensured the presence and constructive participation of women in political processes”.
The document also stresses the need to “exclude crimes related to sexual violence from the scope of amnesty provisions”.
Introducing the draft resolution, German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said that it is primarily aimed to “ensure responsibility for such crimes.”
Another aspect of the resolution is the rehabilitation of victims of sexual violence. According to Maas, victims should be given the conditions to maintain dignity after sexual violence.
