During the first months of 2019, the number of attacks on schools in the east of Ukraine increased by 4 times compared with the same period of the previous year.

The UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) stated that an increase in attacks enhances psychological trauma among schoolchildren, and also creates the risk of physical injury or death for them.

Thus, in the period from January-April 2019, 12 attacks on schools were recorded, whereas in the same period last year there were 3 such incidents, Radio Svoboda reports.

“This alarming statistic recalls the violence that children and teachers suffered in 2017, when more than 40 attacks were committed on educational institutions,” the report says.

“Schoolchildren have long-term psychological and physical traumas due to the conflict in the east of Ukraine. The rhythm of school life is violated by shelling, which causes children to hide in basements and bomb shelters. In many cases, children are too scared to learn,” said UNICEF executive director Henrietta Faure.

“The organization calls on all states, including Ukraine, to adopt the Declaration on School Safety – an intergovernmental political commitment to take concrete measures to protect students, teachers and educational institutions from intentional and accidental attacks during armed conflict,” the organization said.

As the “Journalist” reported, the USA transferred modern radar to the Ukrainian Armed Forces to detect and destroy enemy artillery.
