U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has said the country is introducing new sanctions against the Syrian leadership. The sanctions will affect the country’s president Bashar al-Assad and his supporters.

According to Pompeo, the US is launching a sustained campaign of sanctions against the Assad regime under the Caesar Act, which authorizes severe economic sanctions to hold the Assad regime and its foreign enablers accountable for their brutal acts against the Syrian people.

Sanctions against Syria were introduced in 2011 in response to the brutal repression of the Syrian regime against civilians. The restrictions, in particular, prohibit oil import and restrict investment, freeze the assets of the Central Bank of Syria, and impose a ban on the export of equipment and technologies.
