Delegates from 24 countries to discuss protection of marine life in Antarctica

Today, October 22, an international meeting is scheduled in Hobart, Australia, in which 280 scientists, resources managers and governmental representatives from 24 countries will discuss the issue of preserving and protecting marine life in the Southern Ocean and Antarctic waters. This is reported by Radio Freedom.
The consideration of the issue will take place during the 37th annual meeting of the Commission for the Protection of the Marine Resources of Antarctica. It is planned to discuss the proposals regarding the creation of three new marine protected areas in the eastern Antarctic, in the Weddell Sea and on the western Antarctic Peninsula.

«The Southern Ocean is home to some of the world’s most pristine marine ecosystems … It is inhabited with variety of sea creatures: from giant squid to penguins, seals and whales,» said Claire Christian, executive director of the Antarctic and Southern Coalition.

According to Christian, marine protected areas are able to effectively protect these species together with ecosystems. It also guarantees increasing of resilience to climate change.

«Scientists will also analyzed the impact of climate change on marine life in the southern seas and examine the effectiveness of measures for the conservation and management of marine ecosystems,» the report says.
