The Belarus Prosecutor’s Office asks the Minsk court to sentence to three years imprisonment of journalist and blogger Dmitry Halko, a Belarusian citizen who recently lived and worked in Ukraine and covered events in the zone of military operations in Donbas.
As Radio Liberty reports, Halko is charges on assaulting a police officer.
The court of the Soviet district of Minsk began trial on July 10. The journalist was detained in April, after he returned to Belarus from Ukraine, where he has lived for several months.
Investigators claimed that 38-year-old Halko had a conflict with a police officer, in a result of which officer’s phone was broken. The journalist rejects prosecution.
Halko has worked in many independent Belarusian medias. Among his last places of work in Belarus was the opposition website Belarusian Partisan (which was blocked last year in Belarus), founded by Pavlo Sheremet.
Halko was also a freelance writer for several Ukrainian media, in particular for English version of Kyiv Post news agency. Since 2014, Galko has made many work trips to Donbas, where he wrote about the armed conflict in the east of Ukraine.
As «The Journalist» reported, Lukashenko offers Miss Belarus-2018 to head collective farm.
