Treasure of gold and bronze coins from the turn of the 12th-13th centuries was discovered by Georgian archaeologists during excavations of the territory of the Tetritskaroy municipality (Kvemo-Kartli region), on the ruins of the ancient city-fortress Samshvilde. About this informs SPUTNIK.
Report notes that the treasure was found in the citadel’s floor, it was hidden in a wooden box. In total there are 270 coins, three of them identified, they belong to different Georgian tsars – George III (1156-1184) and George IV Lasha (1191-1223), and also Tamar the Great (1166-1213).
On the coin of the times of Tamar the Great inscription was struck –«The great queen, the beauty of the country and faith, Tamar is the daughter of George, the worshiper of the Messiah».
It is noted that experts do not exclude that among the coins there may be previously unknown pieces.
According to the head of the expedition, Professor David Berikashvili, along with the coins, there were copper bars and copper plates intended for the issue of money, which according to experts may indicate that there could be a mint in Samshvilde.
It should be noted that the archaeological site has been exploring since 2013, the archaeological expedition was organized within the framework of cooperation between the National Agency for the Protection of Cultural Heritage of Georgia and the State University of Georgia.
