The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) has proposed a new draft law that provides a ban on 90% of microplastic used in the EU, Naked Science reported.

According to ECHA, every year, Europe releases 40,000 tons of microplastic – tiny plastic particles less than five millimeters diameter: from cosmetics and detergents to paints and fertilizers. In this regard, ECHA proposes to ban about 90 percent of this microplastic – in particular, microplastics that are not necessary but have been added to products by manufacturers for convenience or profit.
In case the bill will be adopted, the amount of microplastic will decrease by 440,000 tons over the next two decades.
