About hundreds protesters chanted slogans against the Government’s plans to transfer the remains of dictator Francisco Franco from the monumental complex "Valley of the Fallen" near Madrid. This is reported by UNN news agency.
It is reported that the government of Spain plans to transfer the remains of dictator and turn the memorial complex Valley of the Fallen into a place of memory for the victims of the Spanish Civil War (1936–39) and of the Franco regime.
It is worth noting, that a large stone cross is installed at the site of the mausoleum. Representatives of the socialist government and their adherents believe that the dictator’s grave is splitting society. In turn, representatives of the extreme right are against the idea of exhuming Franco, because the memorial remains an important symbolic place where they come to pay homage to the late general.
INFO: Franco led Spain from 1939 to 1975. Caudillo (Caudillo of Spain by the Grace of God – ed.), who came to power after the victory of anti-republic forces in the civil war of 1936-1939, died of a heart attack at the age of 82 in a Madrid hospital. The monument to the memory of all those who perished in the civil war (in which the dictator was buried), was built in 1940 by the order of the dictator himself. The Valley of the Fall was built by prisoners and was completed in 1958.
As «The Journalist» reported earlier, General Franco will be reburied in Spain.
