In connection with the active public discussion that has developed around situation with new edition of Ukrainian spelling, Ministry of Education and Science considers to extend time for public discussion of this project, writes Radio Svoboda.
This was stated in an interview by Minister of Education and Science of Ukraine Liliia Hrynevych.
«Our observations and heated discussions around spelling suggest that this public discussion needs to be continued, and a large information campaign is needed, because people are frightened that they will be forbidden to say something like that, but they will force you to speak otherwise. Because many of them did not even read this spelling and this sentence in detail, but someone somewhere heard something», Minister of Education and Science explained.
Appropriateness of implementation of changes in spelling Liliia Hrynevych argued with russification, which is inherent in Ukrainian language and caused corresponding changes in linguistic norms.
According to Liliia Hrynevych, «the new wording of spelling requires additional scientific discussion, and extension of discussion period will attract scientists who are not members of the working group».
The existing version of Ukrainian spelling was adopted in 2012.
