12 seamen, suspected in smuggling return to Ukraine from Greece

Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine stated that thanks to the actions of Ukrainian consuls, 12 sailors from Mekong Spirit ship, suspected of smuggling military goods to countries that are under UN sanctions are returning from Greece to their homeland.

This was announced by the deputy director of the department Vasyl Kyrylych, reports Unian.

«Today, Ukrainian sailors, who were on the Mekong Spirit for 14 months, return to Ukraine on route Athens-Istanbul-Odessa. Five Ukrainian crew members of the vessel in question remain in Greece in connection with the conduct of the investigative actions», Kyrylych said.

He recalled that Mekong Spirit (the flag of Malta) was detained on May 25th, 2017 near the island of Crete on suspicion of smuggling military goods to countries and regions of the world that are under UN sanctions.

Let’s notice, that in Greece many Ukrainian seamen serve punishment for transportation of illegal migrants. To date, there are 109 seafarers. A total of 151 Ukrainians are prosecuted in Greece.

As «Journalist» reported 112 Ukrainians are in the prisons of Greece on charges of transporting illegal migrants.
