The Law was backed by 278 deputies of Ukraine.
Some 106 deputies from the BPP faction, 66 from the Popular Front, 21 from the Samopomich faction, 21 from the Radical Party faction, 16 from the Batkivshchyna, 7 – from the group “Will of the People”, 4 – from the Vidrozhennya group voted in favor of the Language Law. The deputies from Opposition bloc abstained.
This law is not applicable to the sphere of private communication and religious ceremonies.
The law provides that every citizen of Ukraine is obliged to speak as the language of his citizenship. At the same time, the state shall organize Ukrainian language courses for adults and provides an opportunity to master the national language to citizens of Ukraine free if they had not this opportunity.
According to the law, a person who intends to acquire Ukrainian citizenship is obliged to confirm the appropriate level of proficiency by passing Ukrainian language test.
In addition, the Verkhovna Rada imposed fines for violating the Law “On ensuring the functioning of the Ukrainian language as the state language”.
