Levko Lukyanenko’s life was not easy: arrests, more than 25 years of Soviet camps, death sentence, and pardon. But, as his friends and relatives remember, even such tests did not break strong spirit of this man. When serving his sentence in the Mordovian camps, Levko Lukyanenko fought against the administration of the camps on the facts of gross violation of prisoners’ rights. In addition, the dissident was one of the founders of the Ukrainian Helsinki Group.

However, according to many, his most remarkable achievement is that he became the author of the Act of Declaring Ukraine’s Independence. It is also symbolic that the Verkhovna Rada adopted this document on the birthday of Levko Lukyanenko on August 24, 1991.
An outstanding public and political figure was buried in Kyiv at Baykove cemetery.
