US Special Representative in Ukraine Kurt Volker is not optimistic about the situation where Russia categorically refuses even discuss the issue of returning Crimea. Ukraine will have to wait the de-occupation of the peninsula for a long time, the Public Radio International reported.

Volker noted that similar situation when the Soviet Union took over the territories of Baltic states. The United States did not recognize this annexation and issued a declaration in 1940 called Welles Declaration. However, the restoration of the independence of the Baltic countries lasted for a half a century.

The US special envoy also noted that, despite the obstacles, no one is going to accept that Crimea belongs to Russia.

“We’re not going to see quick movement on Crimea, but likewise, no one is going to accept that it is been taken over by Russia. And at the end of the day, I would expect that it eventualy will become restored as part of Ukraine — it is just going to take a very long time,” Volker said.
