The U.S. Special Representative for Ukraine Negotiations, Kurt Volker, told the US Senate about the possible risks for deoligarchization in Ukraine, Voice of America reports.
Answering the question of Senator Robert Menendez about whether Kolomoisky controls the new president of Ukraine, Volker confirmed that the State Department was aware of Zelensky’s relationship with Kolomoisky.
But, at the same time, Volker noted that Volodymyr Zelensky should make efforts to weaken the influence of oligarchs on the political system.
“We believe that Zelensky deserves a chance. We support the principles of reform, overcoming the oligarchs’ dominance, such as Kolomoisky, in the Ukrainian political system. We hope that Zelensky can be independent and keep his promises. And we are going to, as well as to hold him accountable in case it does not happen,” Volker said.
