In Africa, a second major outbreak of a dangerous disease, Ebola, was recorded. This was reported by the UN.
In the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), the second-largest outbreak of Ebola was recorded.
“We managed to take the disease under control in Mangun, Beni and Team, but in Butembo – due to constant population movements and the lack of preventive measures – the virus continues to spread,” said Zhanfranko Rotillano, a UN representative in the DRC. “We are expanding our operations and sending additional teams of medical staff to Butembo, where 65% of new Ebola cases have occurred in recent weeks.”
In general, over the past six months in the Congo, 740 people became infected with the Ebola virus, 460 of them died, 30% of the infected were children.
This Ebola outbreak is the 10th and most ambitious in Congo. Overall, it is the second largest in history — after the Ebola outbreak in 2014–2016 in Liberia, Guinea, and Sierra Leone.
