Zelensky proposes to make Hanukkah, Rosh Hashanah and Passover national religious holidays

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy has instructed the Cabinet of Ministers to work out the issue of granting national status to certain religious holidays, including Ramazan Bayram, Qurban Bayram, Passover, Rosh Hashanah, Hanukkah, Western Christian Easter, and others, the President’s Office reports.

The head of state signed the corresponding decree No. 303/2020 on July 30, 2020.

As noted in the document, such a proposal was made with the aim of ensuring the constitutional rights and freedoms of citizens, realizing of equal rights and opportunities for all believers, honoring the history, culture and traditions of Ukrainian multinational and multiconfessional society.

According to the decree, the government shall study this issue and develop proposals for interaction with the All-Ukrainian Council of Churches, religious organizations and the Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance, before submitting a corresponding bill for the Verkhovna Rada consideration.

The decree comes into force on the day of its publication.
