13 EU countries issue statement on rule of law amid coronavirus pandemic

Germany and 12 other EU member states issued a joint statement expressing their concern over the encroachment on basic human rights and freedoms in context of coronavirus pandemic, DW reports.

EU countries are concerned about the risks of violations of the principles of rule of law arising from the adoption of certain emergency measures.

The media noted that the statement indirectly addressed the controversial provisions of the Hungary’s new law, which parliament on March 30 vested the government of Viktor Orban with exclusive powers for the duration of the emergency regime.
