President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky believes that it is necessary to eliminate at the legislative level the possibility of businessmen influencing the editorial policy of their media.

“All media owners should be businessmen, not politicians. They may own 90% of shares, but they should not influence the politics of one or another media resource,” the president said during a press marathon on October 10.

Zelensky believes this can be regulated by the relevant law, and he will support its development. The Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports of Ukraine could prepare a document.

“We waited for our ministry, led by Volodymyr Borodiansky, to be fully formed, and we will begin. We will design the bill in general and will discuss it, discuss it with television channels so that we don’t have a single misunderstanding,” the President said.

The President recalled that Ukrainian main media groups belong to representatives of big business. Thus, there should be a law governing the media sector, and the National Council of Ukraine on Television and Radio Broadcasting, which issues and revokes licenses, should monitor its implementation.

According to Zelensky, after the relevant bill to be developed and introduced in the Verkhovna Rada, it should be discussed, in particular, with the owners of television channels and media holdings.

“No matter what we like: they are owners. We should meet, sit down and say: it is no longer possible to influence politics [information – ed.] in Ukraine,” the president added.

As The Journalist reported, Zelensky commented on protests against withdrawal of troops and called main mistake of Poroshenko.
