Budapest would block Ukraine’s membership in NATO until Kyiv restores the rights that ethnic Hungarians had before a language law was adopted.

This was stated by Hungary’s Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto on the sidelines of the NATO summit in London, Reuters reports.

“We ask for no extra rights to ethnic Hungarians in Transcarpathia, only those rights they had before,” he noted.

According to the minister, Hungary is open for consultations with Ukraine on this issue.

Recall that relations between Ukraine and Hungary worsened after adoption in fall of 2017 by the Verkhovna Rada a new law on education which promote the Ukrainian language in state educational institutions.

The Venice Commission urged Ukraine in 2017 to ensure a sufficient proportions in minority languages in addition to Ukrainian.

As The Journalist reported, Hungary denied information it appealed to Russia for help to protect minorities in Ukraine.
