Every year, more than 250,000 Germans go abroad to live, according to official statistics from Germany.

The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development conducted an analysis and tracked which countries the Germans emigrated to.

The report notes that for 2019, the top five countries are as follows:

Switzerland – 16.3%;

Austria – 13.5%;

Great Britain – 10%;

Netherlands – 8.7%;

Spain – 7.5%.

Top 10 also include Turkey (7%), France (4.7%), Japan (4.3%), USA (3.9%) and New Zealand (3.7%), DW writes.

Why these countries are chosen by the Germans?

1. Switzerland

This country has a common border with Germany, the Swiss speak the same language with the Germans, and salaries in Switzerland are 50% higher compared to German. Taxes are significantly lower, and living standards are higher.

2. Austria

Geographically, Austria also has a common border with Germany. The language in Austria is even closer to the Germans than Swiss German. Mostly Germans settle in Vienna.

3. UK

German ties with the United Kingdom are so deep that even the royal family has German roots – from the Hanover dynasty. Many Germans move to London, work in the field of education and science, or in the health care system.

4. The Netherlands

Mastering the Dutch language is relatively easy for the Germans. The unemployment rate in the Netherlands is lower than German, and people are generally more relaxed, which the Germans also like.

5. Spain

Spain is much warmer in autumn and winter than in Germany. Germans also like Spanish cuisine.
