The National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (SAPO), together with the Central Anti-Corruption Bureau of Poland and the District Prosecutor’s Office, are conducting authorized searches in Kiev, Lviv and on the territory of Poland as part of a joint investigation into the activities of a criminal organization in the road sector.
The investigative actions are carried out in the offices of Ukravtodor, companies participating in the government agency’s tenders, as well as at the place of residence of former officials of the government agency and Polish citizens – alleged participants in the criminal organization.
“During the investigative actions in Poland, the former head of Ukravtodor, a citizen of Poland, was detained on suspicion of committing corruption crimes,” the NABU representative stressed, adding that the details of the case would be revealed later.
Polish citizen Slawomir Novak was appointed by the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine as acting head of Ukravtodor on October 19, 2016. Prior to that, he was a member of the Polish Seimas, responsible for transport plans and investments in Poland’s preparation for Euro 2012.
In 2011-2013, he served as Minister of Transport, Construction and Marine Economy of Poland. In September 2019, the Cabinet of Ministers dismissed Novak from the position of head of the State Agency for Roads of Ukraine.
