Representatives of the European Union at the summit have agreed on the introduction of sanctions against representatives of the Belarus authorities. They should come into force next week, Radio Liberty journalist Rikard Jozwiak reports.
At a press conference, the President of the European Council Charles Michel confirmed that starting from October 2, the European Union will impose sanctions on about 40 Belarus officials responsible for electoral fraud and human rights violations.
Alexander Lukashenko has not yet been included in the sanctions list.
A month ago the EU promised to impose sanctions against Belarus for electoral fraud and human rights violations, but this did not happen due to the position of Cyprus, which wants sanctions against Turkey to be imposed in parallel.
