Officials in Brussels are debating citizens of which countries will be allowed to enter the EU on July 1 when the international borders are scheduled to be opened – and who will be banned, Euronews reports.

“There are two lists: one for those who will be allowed, and one for those who will not. One list has already aroused controversy after sources said the United States – the country most affected worldwide by COVID-19 with more than 2.4 million cases, is on the list,” the report reads.

On the eve of June 25, European officials failed to decide on which countries will be banned from entry after the opening of the EU’ external borders.

At the same time, the publication received from EU diplomatic sources the full draft list of the countries for which the borders of Europe will be open.

“Euronews can confirm that Brazil, Qatar, the United States and Russia are indeed not on the approved list,” the report emphasizes.

Sources also threw into doubt the border reopening date of July 1, suggesting that agreements will not be forthcoming in time.

The list of countries whose citizens will be allowed to enter Europe includes: Montenegro, Serbia, Ukraine, Turkey, China, Japan, Georgia, India, Australia, Cuba, Venezuela, Canada, Egypt […].

“Diplomatic sources also hinted that there is disagreement between the EU and the countries regarding unreliable data about COVID-19 rates. They are asking the ECDC [European Center for Disease Prevention and Control – ed.] to provide more detailed information. Also, the lists of countries will be reviewed every two weeks,” the report states.

As for the UK, according to the European Commission, British citizens are still to be treated in the same way as EU citizens until the end of the Brexit transition period (Dec 31, 2020).
