The US Senate Armed Services Committee instructed the Pentagon to find a place to build one or more new strategic ports in the Arctic.

This step, as the senator’s state, should be a response to the Russian military presence in the region, as Radio Svoboda reports.

The US Department of Defense and the Maritime and River Transport Agency should submit a joint progress report within 90 days.

Senators pay attention to the development of the “Northern Clover” Russian base on Kotelny Island on the archipelago of the Novosibirsk Islands, equipped with radar stations and anti-ship missile systems.

The ice melting opens potentially new trade routes in the Arctic Ocean, and in this regard, the Congress points to the US strong backlog from Russia in the issue of the icebreaking fleets number, including nuclear ships.

In order to overcome this backlog, the US Coast Guard announced a contract for $ 750 million to develop six modern small icebreakers.

As reported by The Journalist, Trump named new Pentagon’s acting head.
