Special European Council summit will take place on May 28, according to the President of the European Council, Donald Tusk:

“I call a special EUCO on 28 May to start the process to nominate the next leaders of the EU institutions. This should be swift, effective and in accordance with our Treaties. If consensus proves difficult, I will not shy away from putting these decisions to a vote in June.”

Recall that elections to the European Parliament will be held on May 23-26 in the EU countries.

In addition, the leaders of the EU countries declared their intention to strengthen unity and protect the common values of a united Europe.

This is stated in the declaration on the results of the informal EU summit in Romania, published on the website of the EU Council.

EU leaders met in Sibiu (Romania) to discuss an ‘strategic agenda’ for the 2019-2024.

The declaration recalls that in a few weeks the Europeans will elect their representatives to the European Parliament, 40 years after they did it for the first time.

The leaders of the EU countries expressed their conviction that, being united, the countries of the community will become stronger in the current turbulent and complex world.

“We recognise our responsibility as leaders to make our Union stronger and our future brighter, while recognising the European perspective of other European States,” the declaration says.

The leaders of the EU countries stated that they unanimously agreed on 10 commitments, among which are the protection of the European unity, the search for joint solutions, the defense of democracy and the rule of law, and the defense of common values and principles.
