The Brexit Agreement between the UK and the European Union entered into force today, January 31. This was reported by the press service of the EU Council.
The agreement provides for an orderly exit of Britain from the EU and covers the rights of citizens, financial matters, the transition period, protocols for Ireland and Northern Ireland, Cyprus and Gibraltar.
Coming into legal effect of this agreement marks the beginning of the transitional period, which will last until December 31, 2020. During this period, the EU and Britain must agree on a new deal regarding a future partnership. The transition period may be extended only once for a period of one or two years, if both parties agree to this before July 1, 2020.
