Special Representative for Ukraine Negotiations Kurt Volker said that the restoration of the peace in Donbas, as well as the restoration of the territorial integrity of Ukraine depends on Russia’s consent.
He also stressed that the residents of Donbas who became victims of the conflict are not forgotten.
“We would like to see the moment when they come to a normal life. We sincerely want a solution to be found. Russia remains the main side of this conflict, it managed the military, intelligence, and the economy, and exercises control over local structures. Russia need only to agree that the territorial integrity of Ukraine should be restored, and peace will reign there. There would be an opportunity to restore the economy. There would be reuniting of families. It would be all that we want to see in order to return to normal life,” Volker said in an interview with Radio Liberty.
The U.S. Special Representative is convinced that Russia’s actions (occupying the territory of Ukraine) do not correspond to Russian interests.
“As for me, in fact, it caused damage to Russia and helped to unite Ukraine as a state. National identity in Ukraine became stronger than ever, and therefore I do not think that Russia’s actions really help it,” Volker noted.
